Winter in Wells Gray
In winter, Wells Gray is transformed into a very different world. The snow fall in the valley usually starts in December with a snow pack ranging from a few centimeters to a meter and half, while higher up in elevation the snow pack can vary from 3m to 4m in the average year.
This provides the perfect opportunity for winter recreations. There are over 85km of Nordic ski / Cross country ski trails, with many trails being expertly groomed. There are two sets of groomed trail areas. One is Candle Creek, located 10 min from Clearwater and the other is called Murtle River Nordics, located within the Wells Gray Park. Both ski areas host fun events and loppets – you can check the Events Calendar to found out more about these.
Wells Gray is also known for its consistent snow pack, and fantastic Back country skiing terrain. There are operators who provide back country chalet skiing packages, chalet rentals, and avalanche training.
If skiing of any variety is not your thing, then you will be happy to know the majority of hiking trails during the summer become snowshoeing trails during the winter, leading to interesting vistas and features such as frozen waterfalls. The Waterfall Tour during the winter makes for a fascinating trip and a definite highlight.
In addition, Clearwater has a beautiful community ice-rink, hosting family skating sessions, a range of local hockey tournaments and figure skating events.
Many events are held throughout the winter such as “The Birchleg Ski Loppet”, “ The Ular Festival” and “The Rotary Ice-man Fishing Derby”
