The Experience
A short forest walk leads to several viewpoints overlooking the falls. Unlike the vertical plunge of Helmcken Falls, Dawson Falls spreads wide across the river, creating a curtain of whitewater that roars through the canyon. The trail offers multiple angles — from a close up and thrilling view as the water rushes over the falls, to a photographer’s vantage point where you can see the full width of the falls. Please be aware that the fence at the very top of the waterfall ends just up river from the plunge, keep an eye on pets and children here.
The area is peaceful, shaded, and ideal for families and photographers.
Main Viewpoint (Easy)
Approx. 10 minutes from parking
A gentle, well‑maintained trail leads to the primary viewpoint overlooking the full span of the falls. This is the best option for a quick visit and offers a safe, fenced platform with a clear view of the river pouring over the lava shelf.

Lower Viewpoint (Easy–Moderate)
Approx. 1 km round trip
Continue along the trail to reach a second viewpoint closer to river level. This angle gives you a sense of the power and width of the falls as the water surges past. Expect a few short hills and roots, but the trail remains accessible for most visitors.

Geography of Dawson Falls
Dawson Falls flows over a thick layer of ancient lava that once filled the Clearwater Valley. As the Murtle River flows over a wide, flat shelf with softer layers underneath that now forms the lip of the waterfall. The canyon walls reveal distinct layers of basalt, showing how multiple lava flows built up over time. This combination of volcanic history and river erosion makes Dawson Falls one of the best places in the park to see how Wells Gray’s landscape was shaped. The broad, even drop is a direct result of these geological layers — a natural cross‑section of the valley’s past.
How to Get There
Dawson Falls is located along the Clearwater Valley Road, approximately 47 km from Clearwater. The road is paved and accessible for all vehicles. A signed turnoff leads to a large parking area, with the viewpoint just a short walk away.
