Winter Activites

When winter arrives, Wells Gray transforms into a serene, snow-covered wonderland. Snow usually begins to blanket the valley in December, with depths ranging from a few centimeters to 1.5 meters. At higher elevations, the snowpack can reach an impressive 3 to 4 meters in an average year.

This snowy landscape offers endless opportunities for winter recreation. The park features over 85 km of cross-country ski trails, many of them expertly groomed. Two main areas provide groomed trails: Candle Creek, just 10 minutes from Clearwater, and Murtle River Nordics, located within Wells Gray Park itself. Both areas host fun events and loppets—you can check the Events Calendar to see what’s coming up.

Wells Gray is also celebrated for its reliable snowpack and exceptional backcountry skiing terrain. Local operators offer backcountry chalet skiing packages, chalet rentals, and avalanche training for those seeking adventure beyond the groomed trails.

Not a skier? No problem. Many summer hiking trails transform into scenic snowshoe routes in winter, offering breathtaking vistas and frozen waterfalls along the way. The Winter Waterfall Tour is a particular highlight, showcasing the park’s icy wonders.

For something closer to town, Clearwater has a lovely community ice rink that hosts family skating sessions, hockey tournaments, and figure skating events throughout the season.

Winter in Wells Gray also brings a variety of exciting local events, including The Birchleg Ski Loppet, The Ular Festival, and The Rotary Ice-Man Fishing Derby, making the season vibrant and full of activity for all ages.
