The Experience
Helmcken Falls is one of the most iconic natural wonders in British Columbia. Dropping an incredible 141 m into a volcanic amphitheatre carved by the Murtle River, it’s the fourth‑highest waterfall in Canada.
Helmcken Falls is breathtaking from every angle. A short walk from the parking area leads to a fenced viewing platform perched directly across from the thundering plunge. Mist rises from the canyon, rainbows appear on sunny days, and in winter the falls build a towering ice cone — one of the park’s most dramatic seasonal sights.
For those wanting a longer outing, the Helmcken Falls South Rim Trail follows the canyon edge through open forest to a birds‑eye view of the waterfall from above.
Geology of Helmcken Falls
Helmcken Falls plunges over a deep volcanic canyon carved by the melting of glaciers about 10,000 years ago. The dying glaciers carried rocks and dirt, highly erosive material that peeled the basaltic columns formed by the cooling lava flows of the canyon walls like slices of bread. After the glaciers melted, the Murtle River started carving the canyon downward. During the winter huge plumes of mist are carried upward and penetrate the cracks in the solidified lava. When this mist accumulates and freezes, it expands creating wedges that carve out the huge amphitheater that surrounds Helmcken Falls now. Helmcken Falls is one of the best places in the park to see this geological history in a single view, with the waterfall, canyon, and lava formations all visible from the main viewpoint.
Seasonal Changes
Each season offers a completely different experience — many visitors return multiple times a year.

Spring
Spring brings the most dramatic water flow of the year. Snowmelt from the Wells Gray high country surges through the Murtle River, sending a roaring plume over the edge of the canyon. The mist can drift all the way to the viewing platform, and the surrounding forest begins to green up with early-season foliage. It’s an incredible time for photographers who want to capture the falls at their most powerful.

Summer
Summer offers long days, warm temperatures, and vibrant greens along the canyon. The canyon faces west into the setting sun, so on clear afternoons, rainbows often appear in the mist at the base of the falls — a stunning site for visitors. Trails are fully accessible, making this the best season for families, casual hikers, and anyone wanting a relaxed visit with clear views.

Winter
In winter, Helmcken Falls transforms into one of the most unique natural ice features in Canada. Spray from the waterfall freezes into a massive ice cone that can grow over 50 m tall. Giant icicles cling to the canyon walls forming gorgeous shapes. The falls continue to thunder into the growing cone, creating a surreal mix of motion and stillness. The road is maintained to the Falls all year and if you are prepared for winter conditions, you will be treated to an unforgettable sight.
How to Get There
Helmcken Falls is located along the Clearwater Valley Road, approximately 42 km from Clearwater. The road is paved and accessible for all vehicles. A signed turnoff leads to a large parking area, with the viewpoint just a short walk away. The Rim Trail begins from a separate parking area slightly farther down the road.
